Sindhu, Manika, Mary Kom win; swimmer Maana fails to reach semis: Tokyo Olympics

The Indian rowing team of Arjun Lal and Arvind Singh has made it into the semifinals, while shuttler PV Sindhu won her opener in a fierce start to better Rio campaign. Indian players Sunday have improved their medal tally with multiple events lined up on Day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics.

The Indian paddler Manika Batra advanced to the third round. Afterwards, Mary Kom opened her Tokyo 2020 campaign with a round of 32 wins in the 51kg category. But her fellow boxer Manish Kaushik (63kg category) faced an early exit with a loss in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Indian swimmer Maana Patel could not qualify for the semifinals of the women’s 100m backstroke event as she finished second in her heat at the Tokyo Games on Sunday.

Competing in her first Olympics, Maana finished with a time of 1.05.20 behind Zimbabwe’s Donata Katai, who clocked 1:02.73.

In the shooting event, Manu Bhaker, Yashaswini Deswal, Deepak Kumar, and Divyansh Panwar failed to qualify for 10m air pistol in their respective categories.

Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina crash out of the women’s doubles after losing 6-0, 6-7(0), 8-10 to the Kichenok twins of Ukraine.

India’s lone gymnast Pranati Nayak failed to qualify for the All-Round finals. Paddler G Sathiyan goes down in the first round after battling on for seven sets.
