Mithun Chakraborty, a popular Bengali and Bollywood actor Sunday joined the BJP, a little ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at the city’s Brigade Parade Ground. The move comes weeks ahead of the state Assembly polls scheduled for March-April.

The party’s state in-charge Kailash Vijayavargiya had met up with the star yesterday at his residence in the state capital’s Belgachia locality, sparking much speculation.

“I have spoken with him (Mithun Chakraborty) over the telephone, he’s going to come today. I will be able to make a comment only after a detailed discussion with him,” Vijayavargiya said later.

The 70-year-old Chakraborty has a huge fan following in the state, especially after his 2006 film, MLA Fatakeshto, with his legendary line, “Maarbo ekhane, lash porbay shoshaney” (“I’ll thrash you here, your body will be found at the crematorium”).

Sharda Chit Fund case

He quit the Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool member after two years in office after getting embroiled in the Sharda Chit Fund case. The actor was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate about the ₹ 1.2 crore he had received for being the brand ambassador of a TV news channel financed by the group. He returned the amount to the probe agency and resigned from the Upper House citing ill-health.

In any case, he isn’t the only one adorning the stage in Kolkata today, if BJP sources are to be believed. The event is also likely to feature many folk artists, ANI reported. Along with the 72-feet long main stage, two other stages have also been set up, one for Tollywood actors and another for other important personalities. The two other stages are 48-feet length, 24-feet width and 7-feet height.

Apart from Vijayavargiya, other BJP functionaries supervising the rally include National Vice-President Mukul Roy, General Secretary Sanjay Singh, and Rajya Sabha Swapan Dasgupta. Over 1,500 CCTV cameras have been installed across the city for security purposes. Drone cameras will also be used to monitor the venue.

The rally is expected to be attended by at least 7 lakh people, sources told ANI. Three main barricades have been strategically placed toward the main stage for security purpose. Barricades and a helipad has been created at the Race Course near the Brigade Ground.
