The Congress did what it said. But the BJP makes only false promises, said Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, taking a dig at the Madhya Pradesh government’s reported statement in the assembly that farmers in 51 districts benefited from the farm loan waiver scheme of the Kamal Nath dispensation.
In a tweet, Gandhi shared a media report on the Madhya Pradesh government stating in assembly in reply to a question that farm loans were waived in 51 districts under the previous Kamal Nath dispensation.
“Congress — Did what it said. BJP — Only false promises,” the Congress leader said.
Kamal Nath on Tuesday had said that the Madhya Pradesh government had admitted in the Legislative Assembly that 26.95 lakh farmers in 51 districts were benefited from the previous Congress-led dispensation’s farm loan waiver.
MP Govt’s admission
The admission by the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government came during the single-day session of the state Assembly.
Agriculture Minister Kamal Patel gave written replies to questions about farm loan waivers raised by two Congress MLAs.
Patel informed the House that 26,95,381 farm loan cases up to ₹ 1 lakh each had been waived off. Thus the total value of loans waived off, the minister said, was around ₹ 11,000 crore.
According to the data provided, loans of around 20.2 lakh farmers were waived in the first phase alone. There were also around 5.91 lakh cases still awaiting a waiver, the minister said.
After being sworn in as the Agriculture Minister, Patel said that it was unclear if farmers’ loans had waived.
“Within two hours of being sworn-in as Chief Minister, Kamal Nath signed the file to waive farm loans of around 48 lakh farmers (worth ₹ 54,000 crore) in line with a poll promise made by Rahul Gandhi. But, only waiver certificates have been distributed to eligible farmers. It is still not clear if the outstanding loans have been waived,” he had said.
