Worry is a disabling ‘faith’. It impoverishes the present by
borrowing from tomorrow’s imagined troubles.
Those who trust in God need not worry about necessary food, drink or
clothing. Worry never satisfies our needs and always destroys our peace. Trust
means knowing that God will give us the grace to face each day’s trouble as it
God knows us and can be trusted to satisfy His creatures’ needs.
God’s word says “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow
nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father (God) feeds them”. And
again it says, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither
toil nor spin; and yet even Solomon (the wisest of the wise) in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these.”
If God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and
tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you?
Are you not of more value
than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? Worrying
cannot extend the lifespan of a person and those who worry do not enjoy life
while they live.
The main reason for not worrying is that God cares about us. If He
provides for the birds and the grass, will He not care for us? When we worry,
we act like those who do not know God.
We must not be drawn away from total loyalty to God by worry over
material things. God will care for our earthly needs. These are necessary, but
not the goal of life.
Give God our total loyalty. When we do so, we can avoid the worry, because He will care for all that things that we need.
To worry is to doubt God’s ability to help. Instead, we are to tell
God our needs with thanksgiving for past blessings. The peace of God’s own
being, which He shares with us, will guard our emotions and thoughts. This
peace guards our hearts like a squad of soldiers guarding a town. If we
cooperate with God’s will, even though it means suffering, He will exalt us in
His own time.
Our chief concern is not to amass material wealth and security, but through faithfulness to God, along with kindness and goodness to others, we are to work for treasures in heaven. Only these treasures have eternal value. Wealth is evil when it is allowed to be a master instead of a servant.
So seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all
these things shall be added to you. Therefore, do not worry for tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about its own things.
