Food for Thought
“You are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you. If any one defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him.”

God created man in His own image, according to His likeness, with dominion over all other creations in this world. Man is God’s visible representative, to lord over all creations as God would rule it. He was endowed with reason, moral self consciousness, freedom to choose, imagination and creativity. God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living being.

The term ‘God formed man’ describes the meticulous work of a potter in shaping a vessel from clay, that is his biological body, yet lifeless. But, when God breathed into the nostrils of the formed lifeless body, it became a living being with a spiritual nature. So, life springs directly from God and nowhere else.

Though man is created of the dust of the ground, but the life in him is holy as it was breathed into him by the Holy God.

Apostle Paul says, you are the temple of God, because the spirit (breath) of God dwells in you. If any one defiles or destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him.

God has given authority to man over all the creation in the universe, but over his own life. Because man’s body is the temple of God, it is his bounden responsibility to keep it holy, so that the spirit of God remains in it.

Recently, in Madhya Pradesh, a middle-aged man and a woman, both were married but lovers and medical practitioners by profession, committed suicide allegedly for the sake of their love for each other, hoping that they would join together in rebirth.

It has become a general tendency among people all over the world of committing suicide whenever they face a problem insoluble to their minds, without giving a second thought that suicide is not a solution to any problem. By doing so they are punishing both their own bodies, which are created as the temple of God, and their own souls that they have received as a gift from the Creator. The body suffers all the pains at the time of its biological death and the soul, since it is a sin committed by its bearer, meets the spiritual death.

Taking the life of a person by oneself or another person is a sin against the Creator and, at the same time, a punishable crime against the law of the land, because no human being has the authority to kill self or others. If you do not have the right to give life to a person, from where do you have the authority to take his life? It is the exclusive privilege of the Creator to give life and to take it back.

Spiritual death happens when people defile the holy temple of God with the works of the flesh that is adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outburst of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.

So, by leaving the way of destruction and death, live life that pleases its Creator by bearing the fruits of the spirit, such as love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Don’t forget that life is precious and it is not to defile or destroy through your deeds. For you are the temple of God and the spirit of God dwells in you.
