Another elephant ill; advice of Assam expert sought

BHOPAL: After the sudden death of a female elephant, Mohini, the forest department is taking preventive measure to ensure proper health of other elephants brought here from different areas of the country to keep a guard on the tigers moving in Kerwan and Kaliasot jungle.

Another elephant Smita, which accompanied Mohini from Satpura Tiger Reserve, was also not in a good health and she has been kept at an isolated place segregated from the herd.

Mohini died of Herpes and it is suspected that Smita might have got infected from the disease. Although the forest authorities did not confirm about illness of Smita, sources said she was ill.

Sources further said the forest authorities are consulting expert in treatment of elephants in Assam Dr KK Sharma in this regard.

Divisional Forest Officer L Krishnamurthy said Smita had been kept isolated as a preventive measure. However he did not confirm if Smita was suffering from any disease.
