Man beheads wife; walks to police station with her head in hand

Pune: A man walking with an axe in one hand and his wife’s head in another was nabbed by the police on the road near Ganga Osian Park, in Sukhsagar Nagar area of Katraj around 11 am on Friday.

The police have identified the man as Ramchandra Sheu Chavan (53), resident of Oswal Plot near Ganga Osian Park in Sukhsagar Nagar. His deceased wife has been identified as Sonabai Ramchandra Chavan (45). The police said that Ramchandra beheaded his wife suspecting an illicit affair with his son-in-law. An offence of murder was lodged in this case at the Bharati Vidyapeeth (BVP) police station. His daughter-in-law Sunita Rajesh Chavan (25) filed the first information report (FIR).

The police said that Ramchandra is a native of Gulbarga in Karnataka, but has settled down in Pune for the last 40 years. He was working as a watchman at Oswal Plot for 20 years. The plot is surrounded by high rise buildings.

Ramchandra was residing in a house on the plot with his wife, sons Rajesh and Umesh, daughter-in-law Sunita and two grandsons. Police said that he also had two daughters who were married and lived with their husbands outside Pune.

Investigation revealed that Ramchandra used to quarrel with his wife often. He suspected her having an affair with his son-in-law. On Friday morning, after Rajesh and Umesh left home for work, Ramchandra had heated argument with wife Sonabai. As the quarrel worsened, he locked his daughter-in-law, Sunita and two grandsons in the house and then attacked Sonabai with an axe.

The police said he chopped her head off, then picked up the head in one hand and the axe in other before walking towards the police post. Local residents and passerby were left shocked as they saw the man walking along with an axe and woman’s head on road. A resident informed the police control room. Meanwhile, a motorcyclist informed the traffic police on duty in Rajesh society area.

Soon, traffic cops VK Kumkar, DN Jagtap and Bhalchandra Tanvar rushed to the spot. Apparently, assistant police inspector, Sanjay Chavan and constables, Rahul Kadam and Mukund Pawar, who were patrolling the area, reached the spot. Cops asked Ramchandra to throw the axe and surrender.

Ramchandra first left his wife’s head down. After sometime, he left the axe and the cops nabbed him. He was then brought to the BVP police station. Meanwhile, on knowing about the incident, senior officers including deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Sudhakar Pathare, assistant commissioner of police Atmacharan Shinde, senior inspector Machhindra Chavan of BVP police station, senior inspector (traffic) Chandrakant Bhosale and others visited the crime scene for investigation.

Cops questioned Ramchandra’s family to confirm the cause behind the brutal murder. Cops recorded statements of his sons and daughter-in-law. Family members told cops that Sonabai was suffering from night blindness. The police also noted statements of some eyewitnesses of the incident. DCP Pathare said that from investigation so far, it was known that Ramchandra killed his wife suspecting an illicit affair. Ramchandra was booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). (With inputs from agencies)
