Chh’garh government admits 7 cases of sexual abuse in ashram schools
government informed Assembly that cases of sexual exploitation were reported in
seven government-run ashram (residential) schools in last five years.
In a written reply to a
question by Congress MLA Amarjeet Bhagat, tribal welfare minister Kedar Kashyap
said, “Cases of sexual exploitation were reported in two ashrams - each in
Surguja and Gariyaband districts - in 2011, three each in Jashpur, Balrampur
and Balod districts - in 2012 while two each in Koriya and Kanker districts in
Elaborating the action
taken on these incidents, he said staffs of the ashram school and their
associates were arrested by police.
He said the government
has deployed female Home Guard personnel at ashram schools for girls for
security purpose as well as appointed female staffs there replacing male
Moreover, the government
has also started an emergency helpline number (1091) and toll free
number-18002333666 at Police Control Room and has displayed information about
the numbers on the institute's notice boards, the minister said.
Kashyap said entry of
males inside hostel and ashram schools between 6pm to 6am has been prohibited
while steps were taken for providing basic facilities, including potable water,
toilets, bathroom, shed, electricity, solar lights and other in the institutes,
the minister informed.
Kashyap further said
that monitoring committees at division, district and state-level have been
constituted to make regular and timely inspection of the institutes.
