Nigerian woman gang raped in moving car in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old Nigerian woman was allegedly gang raped in a moving car in New Delhi, police said on Friday. Four people have been arrested. The woman was found in an unconscious state in Mayur Vihar area in east Delhi around 2.43 am on Friday.

Police said when the victim was found, she was under the influence of alcohol. They received a call from a passer-by who spotted the woman. “She told us that she had boarded the accused’s car in which she was gang raped in South Delhi's Saket area,” an official said.

Police added that the woman did not know the accused and had jumped out of the car in Mayur Vihar area. “We have arrested all the four accused, who are residents of Mayur Vihar area,” police said.

Police officials said the woman was picked up by the men, aged between 22 to 25 years, from outside a mall in South Delhi. They drove their car around for at least half an hour raping the woman before reaching the DND toll plaza where they dropped her off.

Reports said that the woman was in India on a tourist visa. The latest incident in the national capital has brought back memories of the Nirbhaya gang rape.

On the night of December 16, 2012, Ram Singh, Vinay, Akshay, Pawan, Mukesh and a juvenile had gang raped a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus after luring her and her 28-year-old male friend, who was also assaulted, on board the vehicle. The rape incident shook the nation’s conscience and led to widespread protests.

The girl had succumbed to her injuries on December 29, 2012 in a Singapore hospital.
