59 Christians reconverted to Hindu religion in Kerala

KOTTAYAM: As many as 59 persons, most of them belonging to Christian families, in Kerala’s Kottayam district were reconverted to Hindu religion under the initiative of Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Christmas day.

The conversion ceremonies, organised by the Viswa Hindu Parishad, were held at Sree Krishna Swamy Temple at Thirunakkara here and Puthiyakavu Temple, Ponkunnam. One of the person who converted is said to be a Muslim.

As many as 17 persons from 11 families in Kumarakom, Vechoor and Manarkad attended the ceremony in Kottayam while 42 persons were reconverted at Puthiyakavu Devi temple in Ponkunnam. Similar functions are being held at various places.

On Wednesday, 11 persons had embraced Hindu religion near Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district in yet another case of conversion since the last week in the state. A batch of 30 persons belonging to eight families of Scheduled Caste Christians had re-converted in the district on December 21.

The reconversion was held amid the controversies over the 'Ghar Wapsi' programme being conducted by the VHP across the country. The Home Minister had ordered a probe into the matter.

Following this, the Chief Minister had said that no forcible conversion had happened in the state. He maintained that the government would interfere if it is necessary.
