Over 30 feared dead as overloaded bus plunges into lake in Himachal
SHIMLA: In a tragic incident, an overload private bus
plunged into Gobind Sagar reservoir of Bhakra project in Bilaspur district of
Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday morning. According to reports from Bilaspur, at
least 30 persons are feared drowned and 16 person injured.
Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kumar, who
rushed to the spot alongwith Principal Secretary (Disaster Management) Tarun
Shridhar in state helicopter, said, “So far 25 bodies have been fished out and
the bus has also been brought out of the deep waters.”
Deputy Commissioner Bilaspur, Ajay Sharma, who was at
the spot, said that there was no exact count of persons drown. The bus was
overloaded and few persons were travelling on the roof.
“I can’t say anything of the cause of accident but it
seems overloading and over-speeding may be a reason. I will get a magisterial
inquiry done,” he said.
The ill-fated bus of Shubham Transport was on its way
from Rishikesh to Bilaspur and most of the passengers were local commuters.
The Deputy Commissioner said rescue operations were
going on in full swing and divers of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) were
called to fish out the bodies. About half a dozen persons who jumped out of the
bus were injured and rushed to a hospital at Bilaspur.
The additional district magistrate Pradeep Thakur has
been appointed as the inquiry officer. Most of the victims are locals,
including school and college going students. The relatives and family members
of the passengers have also reached the spot.
