Over 30 feared dead as overloaded bus plunges into lake in Himachal

SHIMLA: In a tragic incident, an overload private bus plunged into Gobind Sagar reservoir of Bhakra project in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday morning. According to reports from Bilaspur, at least 30 persons are feared drowned and 16 person injured.

Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kumar, who rushed to the spot alongwith Principal Secretary (Disaster Management) Tarun Shridhar in state helicopter, said, “So far 25 bodies have been fished out and the bus has also been brought out of the deep waters.”

Deputy Commissioner Bilaspur, Ajay Sharma, who was at the spot, said that there was no exact count of persons drown. The bus was overloaded and few persons were travelling on the roof.

The ill-fated bus of Shubham Transport was on its way from Rishikesh to Bilaspur and most of the passengers were local commuters.

The Deputy Commissioner said rescue operations were going on in full swing and divers of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) were called to fish out the bodies. About half a dozen persons who jumped out of the bus were injured and rushed to a hospital at Bilaspur.

The additional district magistrate Pradeep Thakur has been appointed as the inquiry officer. Most of the victims are locals, including school and college going students. The relatives and family members of the passengers have also reached the spot.
