Arjuna Award for Tom Joseph, four other Kerala players

KOTTAYAM: The long wait of Kerala volleyball star Tom Joseph for Arjuna Award ended on Tuesday as the Sports Ministry recommended his name for the prestigious honour.

Tom is one of the five Kerala players to win the award this time around, the others being basketball star Geethu Anna Jose, athlete Tintu Luka, badminton player V Diju and rower Saji Thomas.

Reacting to the announcement, Tom Joseph, ace volleyball player, said though the recognition came late, he had no remorse. “Though this award is late, I am happy,” Joseph told the media. Arjuna award had eluded Joseph, who represented the country in many internationals, in the past 10 years.

Joseph had led the Indian national volleyball team in Dubai in 2000 when it won the gold medal. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy congratulated Dronacharya Award Winner Jose Jacob, the rowing coach, and Arjuna Award winners from the state.

Chandy said these sportspersons were Kerala’s pride and inspiration to the young talents of the state.
